Internal Family Systems (IFS)

about IFS

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is based on the understanding that each of us contains an innate healing intelligence, often referred to as the Self. Rather than the therapist “fixing” problems, IFS focuses on helping people reconnect with this inner resource - the one capable of compassion, curiosity, clarity, courage, and calm. From this place, meaningful healing can naturally unfold.

IFS recognizes that our minds are made up of different “parts,” each trying to help us in its own way. Some parts act as protectors, working hard to manage emotions or keep painful experiences out of awareness. Other parts, often called exiles, carry the burdens of past wounds such as shame, fear, or hurt.

In therapy, the goal is not to get rid of these parts but to develop a compassionate relationship with them. As clients learn to approach their protective parts with curiosity rather than judgment, these parts often begin to relax. This creates the conditions for the deeper wounds carried by exiled parts to be safely witnessed and healed.

Through this process, people learn to access and trust their own inner healing intelligence. From there, burdens can be released and the system can begin to reorganize around greater balance, connection, and resilience.

testimonials

“I’ve been in therapy for decades, and I’ve never experienced change like this. Other approaches felt like they stayed on the surface - I could understand things, but nothing really shifted. This actually gets to what’s underneath. I’m not as overwhelmed anymore. I feel lighter, more steady… like something inside me has genuinely changed.”    -   Client

“This week I started seeing things differently - the guilt, the shame, the moods. Instead of getting pulled into them, I can recognize where they’re coming from. They don’t hit the same way. There’s more space, and I don’t feel as overwhelmed by it all.”   -    Client

“The sense of abandonment I usually feel just… wasn’t there. I actually want to do things, I want to live life. I don’t feel like an empty shell anymore. There’s this sense of inner peace now - something I’ve never really felt before. Even when anxiety comes up, I can put my hand on my chest and feel that I’m here.  I don’t feel like I’m fighting to get through each day anymore. My chest doesn’t feel empty - it feels full.  Honestly, this feels like one of the most important shifts I’ve had in my life.”   -   Client

“Before, whatever I was feeling would just take over and feel completely true. Now I can notice it without getting swept up in it. That alone has changed so much - I feel less reactive, more grounded, and more like myself.”   -   Client

“The more I do this work, the more I can hear my parts without exiling them. I’ve started to understand that they all make sense, that they’ve all been trying to protect me in some way. There’s more compassion now, more curiosity, and a real sense that things inside are beginning to work together instead of against each other.”   -   Client
