Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy

about KAP

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) combines the use of ketamine with psychotherapy to support meaningful psychological change. It can be particularly helpful for individuals navigating trauma, depression, anxiety, and persistent patterns that have been difficult to shift through psychotherapy alone.

Ketamine creates a temporary state of increased psychological flexibility, allowing people to "step outside" of entrenched thoughts, emotions, and internal patterns, and relate to themselves from a new perspective.

Within a therapeutic setting, this can create access to innate healing resources. In Internal Family Systems (IFS), this is often experienced as connection to Self - a state of calm, clarity, and compassion - from which parts carrying difficult burdens can be fully witnessed and healed.

research

A growing body of research demonstrates the use of ketamine in the treatment of trauma, depression, anxiety and other conditions. Ketamine has been shown to rapidly reduce symptoms in some individuals, particularly in the context of therapy.

From a neurobiological perspective, ketamine appears to enhance neuroplasticity - the brain’s ability to form new connections - while temporarily loosening rigid patterns of thinking and emotional responding.

When combined with psychotherapy, this window of increased flexibility can facilitate deeper emotional processing, insight, and the possibility of meaningful change.

preparation & integration

Preparation and integration are essential parts of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy.

Preparation helps establish safety, clarify intentions, and orient to the experience. It allows individuals to identify what they hope to explore, while also creating a sense of readiness and trust in the process.

Integration allows insights, emotional shifts, and new perspectives that emerge during the experience to be reflected on, understood, and gradually incorporated into daily life.

Without preparation and integration, the experience may remain just that - an experience. With it, the work can translate into transformative and lasting change.

set, setting, dose & route of administration

The effects of ketamine are shaped by set, setting, and dose.

Set refers to a person’s internal state - including intentions, expectations, internal landscape of parts, and what they are bringing into the experience. A clear and grounded mindset can support a more open and navigable process.

Setting includes both the physical space and the relational field. A safe, comfortable, and intentionally held environment, along with the presence of a trained, trauma-informed therapist, plays a critical role in allowing deeper psychological processes to unfold.

Dose and route of administration influence the depth and character of the experience. Lower, psycholytic doses may facilitate reflection and insight while maintaining a sense of connection to the environment, allowing for greater engagement in therapeutic work during the session.  Higher doses can facilitate more immersive, non-ordinary states of awareness, with processing occuring during integration.

Ketamine may be administered through sublingual lozenges or intramuscular (IM) injection, each offering a different trajectory. Lozenges tend to produce a more gradual, modulated experience, while IM administration typically allows for a more immersive and psychedelic experience.

Careful attention to these elements and tailoring to the individual helps create the conditions for a safe, effective, and therapeutically meaningful experience.

medical supervision

Ketamine is administered within a medically supervised framework. A licensed medical provider evaluates each individual to determine appropriateness and prescribes ketamine when indicated.

For intramuscular (IM) administration, medical staff are present during the session to monitor safety and provide support if needed. For sublingual administration, medical oversight is coordinated as appropriate.

This collaborative model - combining medical oversight with psychotherapy - helps ensure that treatment is both safe and aligned with best clinical practices, while allowing the therapeutic work to unfold in a contained and intentional way.

patient testimonials

“After [KAP], something really shifted. The constant sadness and confusion I used to feel just wasn’t there in the same way. There’s this new sense of peace - and even an undercurrent of joy that’s completely new to me.”    -   KAP Client

"After the session, it felt like all the protection relaxed. I was more present, more open, and able to relate differently - to myself and to others. It was a completely different experience than anything I expected.”    -    KAP Client

“The experience had a real impact I could feel. Patterns that used to loop - grief, loss, trying to fix things - felt disrupted. Things didn’t carry the same weight, and there was a sense of more space and possibility.”    -    KAP Client

cost

The therapeutic portion of the cost of KAP is $200 per hour, with a recommended time container of three hours. This allows time for preparation, the ketamine experience itself, and integration.

Over time, particularly when working with sublingual ketamine, we may choose to shorten the sessions and in some cases, move toward remote work when clinically appropriate.

You will be connected with a medical provider who will assess appropriateness for ketamine and prescribe it if indicated. Fees related to the medical side of treatment are separate.
